Our Evaluation Methodology
The term ‘luxury’ is subjective. At Private Island Bali, we make it objective. Every island, villa, yacht, and experience we recommend has passed a rigorous, multi-faceted evaluation process known as the PIB 100-Point Vetting Matrix. This proprietary methodology ensures that our offerings are not just luxurious in appearance, but flawless in execution, security, and service. It is the foundation of our promise to clients and the reason our recommendations are trusted. This process is managed by our expert team and adheres to our strict Editorial Standards.
The PIB 100-Point Vetting Matrix
Our matrix is divided into five core pillars, each with a weighted score. A partner must achieve a minimum score of 90/100 to be included in our portfolio.
1. Exclusivity & Privacy (30 Points)
This is our most heavily weighted pillar. We assess the tangible and intangible elements of privacy.
- Sovereignty Score: Is the island truly private or shared? What is the proximity to other properties or public access areas?
- Acoustic & Visual Seclusion: We conduct on-site analysis of potential noise pollution (e.g., boat traffic, flight paths) and visual interruptions.
- Access Control: How is access to the island or property managed? We review security protocols, staff vetting, and logistical control points.
- Digital Privacy: Assessment of network security, availability of secure communication channels, and policies on staff photography/social media.
2. Service & Staffing (25 Points)
We evaluate service based on international ultra-luxury standards, adapted for an Indonesian context.
- Staff-to-Guest Ratio: Analysis of the ratio and its effectiveness. We look for a minimum of 3:1 for premier properties.
- Training & Pedigree: We review staff training programs and the background of key personnel (e.g., villa managers, butlers, chefs). Experience with brands like Aman, Four Seasons, or Ritz-Carlton is a key indicator.
- Discretion & Proactiveness: During our anonymous site visits, we score staff on their ability to anticipate needs without being intrusive.
- Language & Communication Skills: Proficiency of key staff in English and other languages relevant to our clientele.
3. Infrastructure & Amenities (20 Points)
This covers the physical quality and reliability of the property and its supporting systems.
- Quality of Build & Design: Assessment of architectural integrity, interior design, and material quality.
- Systems Redundancy: We audit power generation (generators), water desalination/purification systems, and waste management for reliability and environmental compliance.
- Connectivity: Testing of Wi-Fi speed and reliability, and availability of satellite communications.
- Wellness & Recreation: Evaluation of spa facilities, gym equipment, water sports gear, and other amenities.
4. Marine & Terrestrial Ecology (15 Points)
The natural environment is a core part of the experience. We assess its health and accessibility.
- Marine Biodiversity: On-site snorkeling/diving assessment of nearby reef health, fish populations, and water clarity. We often consult with our partners at the Coral Triangle Center.
- Beach & Grounds Quality: Evaluation of beach cleanliness, landscaping, and maintenance of natural habitats.
- Conservation & Sustainability Practices: We score partners based on their tangible commitment to sustainability, from reef-safe policies to community engagement. This is a critical part of our sustainability promise.
5. Logistical Seamlessness & Safety (10 Points)
This pillar assesses the ease and safety of reaching and experiencing the location.
- Transfer & Access: Evaluation of the quality of transfer vehicles (cars, boats, helicopters), safety records, and efficiency of the arrival/departure process.
- Emergency Preparedness: We audit emergency protocols, medical supply availability, staff first-aid training (e.g., Basic Life Support), and evacuation plans in coordination with services like International SOS.
- Regulatory Compliance: Verification of all necessary permits and licenses, as detailed on our Safety & Compliance page.
Ongoing Audits and Partner Management
Inclusion in our portfolio is not permanent. We conduct scheduled annual reviews and unscheduled spot-checks to ensure our partners consistently maintain the standards that earned them their place. We maintain an open feedback loop with our clients, and any negative reports trigger an immediate internal review. This relentless commitment to quality control ensures that a recommendation from Private Island Bali is, and always will be, a guarantee of excellence for your private island Bali journey.
